TikTok, the video-sharing and social networking platform, curates videos based on a variety of factors, one of which is the age of the users. TikTok had gained popularity in 2020 and was one of the most downloaded apps of the year. While the app has hundreds of millions of users, most of them are under the age of 18 and this has given rise to privacy concerns for minors. Last year, the app did tighten its privacy settings because of concerns. All accounts belonging to users under the age of 16 were made private.

Correcting your age is recommended because the platform deletes accounts that don’t have the right age. To make the change, you have to get in touch with the TikTok support team. This requires a couple of steps.
- Open the app on your phone, click on the ‘Profile’ option at the bottom right and then tap on the three lines that you will see on the top right.
- You will not be on the Settings and Privacy page, where you have to open the Support section and opt for ‘Report a Problem’.
- It is time to choose ‘Account and Profile’ and then ‘Editing Profile’ where you select the ‘Other’ option.
- You will find the ‘Need More Help’ option here, which takes you to a feedback form. This is where you enter your request for changing your age because the birth date on your account is inaccurate.
Once you have submitted this, a TikTok representative will get in touch and ask you for some government-issued identification for verifying your age before updating it.
