When you look at high-end interiors, you will see that the majority of them have skirting boards and cornices for a smooth finish. But that doesn’t mean that it’s difficult to achieve this in your home; in fact, it’s fairly easy if you follow our skirting board tips. These finishing touches give your rooms an elegant and clean look, and they are also useful in hiding any imperfections on the walls.
Know Your Options
When you are thinking about installing skirting boards and cornices, it’s important to consider all of your options. There are different types of skirting boards and cornices out there. For example, you can use plasterboard, which is cheap but not as sturdy as plywood or a timber frame.
You can also use tongue-and-groove boarding (T&G), which is used for finishing off the interior of houses. Another option is to look at the service that offers a pre-built kit with skirting boards and cornices already included as part of the package.
These kits will save you time from having to buy the materials yourself, although they cost more than individual materials. Ultimately, it’s up to you to figure out what your needs are when it comes to both style and budget.
Before You Install Your Skirting Board
Before you install your MDF Skirting World, you need to make sure that the walls are even and there are no protruding nails. This can be achieved by measuring the distance from the floor to the highest point on the wall.
Measure up from the floor to find out how high you need your skirting boards to be. If you would like them to be flush with the ground, measure up approximately 45cm-50cm. Measure up from the floor for a height of 100cm if you would like them to stand proud of it.
Mark off on your walls where you want your skirting board and cornices to go, taking into consideration how high they need to be because they will dictate how wide they need to be. Next, use a spirit level and pencil line guide to ensure that your lines are straight and level.
Finally, cut around your line with a saw at an angle so that it will fit nicely against the wall; this should leave behind a triangular gap at one end which you can fill with filler before painting over it.
Installing A Wood Skirting Board
Installing a wood skirting board is simple. All you need to do is measure the length and height of your wall, and then cut your board to those measurements. Once you have cut the board, you need to attach it with screws.
The best way to install it would be by pre-drilling holes and then screw the boards into place. But before you start drilling, make sure that you wear a mask so as not to breathe in any dust particles from the drill bit.
If there are any imperfections on the wall, use a filler or putty before attaching the skirting board so that it will cover up any stray marks or bumps on the surface of the wall.
Once you have installed one side, repeat for the other side of your wall until both sides are finished. Finally, take down any excess material as this will only get in your way when installing your cornice boards.
